Saskatchewan mining industry needs thousands of new workers
The Saskatchewan Mining Association said the province will need about 13,000 to 15,000 new workers in the next 10 years.
Skilled people are definitely in short supply, the association told Metro News in Regina.
A significant part of the labour force is older than 55 and is heading for retirement soon.
The association said it's addressing the issue by partnering with Aboriginal people. It also wants to raise awareness that mining in the province is a more high-tech and skilled occupation.
Additionally, the Saskatoon-based International Minerals Innovation Institute is supporting education, training, research and development in the sector.
The provincial government is also addressing labour market needs through post-secondary education delivery.
